I love love love your food posts, but I also love you tearing the shit out of commercial tourism for how it turns lovely places into plastic-faced hell holes that all look the same... and how funny it is that some people LIKE THAT!

I can't really compare what this place was like before commercial tourism - there's no guarantee it was actually lovely! Laos for a long time had a reputation of being extremely poor and miserable, so perhaps the tourism industry has done the local people good. It's more just my own experience of that sort of tourism that makes me recoil. Clearly i'm in the minority, otherwise these tourist destinations wouldn't be what they are - for whatever reason, people really like it!

Tourism brings the bucks in.... but I don't know why it needs to bring the shitty American commercial franchises and glossy fakeness with it.
