God i hate flying. I like the theory of it. Traveling to distant places, stuck inside an odd metal tube with strangers, occasionally - if you are lucky - getting a bird's eye view of the world passing by. I even like airports too, in theory. I always thought it would be cool to work at one. Just seeing people go by, in every state, frazzled and ( Read more... )

Sorry I laughed at your misfortune, but that was just sooooo me when I travel: wanting to get something thinking it was inside security then finally getting in there and finding out it’s actually outside of it.

Hope the misfortune has all passed and it’s smooth sailing from here onwards! Bon voyage!

In Istanbul we had about 4 hours layover from Taiwan to Geneva and I found a good spot to "sleep" on a concrete ledge thing next to a small garden, so it felt kinda fresh and outdoorsy and quiet, but you're still sleeping on a concrete ledge. Bangkok airport most of the chairs didn't have armrests, so you could stretch across two, three or four of them and kinda sorta lie down even though there were gaps in between, and the seats were slightly slanted so it wasn't flat. Some airports have armrest chairs everywhere, like those anti-homeless benches in city parks, and any traveler who tried to sleep in an airport and still votes for city councils who install those stupid benches should be forced to sleep in plastic chairs for the rest of their lives ( ... )

Yeah, only the fancy full service airlines have lounges,... and that's one of those things I really appreciate about you is how money doesn't change your concept of what is fair. Like just because you qualify for the upgrades of capitalism, you're like, "fuck that, I'll eat whatever that dude is frying up and sleep on a bench before I chuckle it up in the grumpy ass privilege class who are offended they smelled what that dude is frying up or even SEE people sleeping on benches."

The way access to money is treated like the WORTH of a HUMAN is so fucking weird. Like someone who can't afford a bed... doesn't DESERVE a fucking **bed**.

I used to imagine working at airports would be cool.

Curious as to your thoughts on Covid. I remember when covid first hit that we were of similar opinions. Both of us hated masks. Both thought the restrictions were overkill.
Living in Korea I wear a mask where it's mandated to do so (which when I left in October is anywhere inside) but I am very much one of those guys who will take it off the second it's permitted to do so. While in the UK I've followed the mass majority of the population in ditching it all together. But you seem to have very much embraced mask wearing culture. So I was wondering what it is that changed your mind on that?

Anyways, hope Laos is more fun than Bangkok airport!

Great question. I still think outdoor mask mandates are stupid, and I don't see much point inside if you are far enough away from other people in a well ventilated space that by the time your breath got over there whatever was in it would have dispersed itself to be of negligible risk. But on tightly packed public transport, planes and so on, I think it's a basic courtesy we should all continue doing. It used to be common for me to catch a cold when traveling, but since mask wearing on planes became standardized I haven't once gotten off a plane with new sniffles. It just makes sense. And if you're going to wear the mask anyway in public transport or tightly enclosed spaces, might as well leave it on when you are in less tightly enclosed spaces nearby, since it's more hassle to keep putting it on and taking it off than just leaving it on ( ... )

I just got back to Korea last night. It's strange to go from the UK where masks were worn nowhere, save for the one time we had to got to a doctors clinic, back to a country where most people are still masked up to walk down the street ( ... )

I have to admit, I am still a bit skeptical of the people who say they can "never" be comfortable in masks. To me it sounds like saying you can never be comfortable in shoes, or a hat, or a shirt ( ... )
