It is a weird thing where culture is so interested in what IT things "ambition" is, that you're expected to climb out of jobs you DO like, and focus on better paying jobs that are not... what you like. Management, accounts, supervisory, director roles..... while people who might be excellent management/directors/coordinators may not get the chance because they don't love/like the grind work at the beginning that has very little to do with what they like and do best.

It's a VERY strange system.

Mangement should just be paid the same as the grinders... and then everyone is allowed to come in and be whatever they're best at. Why is that so weird??

I think the reasoning behind paying managers more is that managers are responsible for more assets so they get some kind of "responsibility bonus". It's a bigger risk if they mess up too, so perhaps they get a "risk bonus" too? I guess it's a similar reasoning why pilots and doctors and heavy machinery operators get paid more than flight attendants and nurses and general laborers. I don't think i'm opposed to managers earning more (within reason), but at the same time i don't think individual contributors should be punished for not being interested in that career path. Like, i'm not a fan of big companies that put a salary cap on "senior", since when you consider inflation that means you're actually getting paid less each year for the same (or arguably better) work.

I was talking a bit out of the side of my mouth,... but I was really thinking about how say... it wasn't long ago that a factory worker or secretary in America could get a fair base wage, and do THAT job their whole career, while still advancing financially without necessarily moving on to other jobs... climbing the corporate ladder or changing jobs every 2 years ( ... )
