colombian food picture post

I haven't been taking many photos of food since getting to Latin America, because to be honest the food is neither very attractive nor very good. To some degree this is my own fault. I have a rule when traveling that i should only eat at restaurants that are accessible to the average person who lives in the place i am visiting. Which is to say, i ( Read more... )

Working in the office today; just getting out to acquire some pork buns. Lucky I’m just next to Little Bourke!

I ended up with a rice paper roll - barramundi and avo. Wasn’t too bad, but I might stick to my usual salmon-ones. Was sad to see many shops have closed down in Chinatown post-pandemic.

That's too bad. I think the lockdowns and just people's general fear of going out to eat shut down a lot of restaurants in the past two years. Sadly i don't think they'll spring back up again as quickly in central Melbourne as they might elsewhere, i can't imagine it's cheap to bootstrap a business there. It's especially sad in the case of Chinatowns, because a lot of the environmental factors that caused them to get created in the first place don't really exist any more in a lot of countries.

I love this, and in my travels, I try to live this. When I'm out and about, I don't go to chains, unless they're super local, I eat where the locals do.

In fact, I'm about to head out to Hollywood for a special occasion, and will be there for three days. I'm actually reaching out to friends for places to go and people to see that, very specifically, "aren't tourist traps, aren't faux glitz, I want to see what YOU do in Hollywood."

One of my friends dad worked in Hollywood and gave me a TON of things to do, that she did, and they look fantastic, while also being very local. (Sure, one is an Astro Burger across from the Parmount Lot, but, hey, it's a quick easy meal for Paramount employees!)

I saw your call for Hollywood advice, and i wish i had some to offer! J and i only visited LA as a day trip from Vegas, so we drove along all the famous roads to Venice Beach, ate at a California fusion place there, then drove back. It was awesome to see all the landmarks and feel like we were in a movie, and i would totally recommend Venice despite its touristy reputation, but from what i understand over the past 10 years it's turned from a mildly alternative-ish place into a hip tech company hub, so probably not worth it if you only have a couple days. Looking forward to hearing your reports of the area!
