defeated by a ceviche

Mar 26, 2022 11:39

So, obviously, ordering a ceviche in a small town 250km from the sea is a bad idea. I knew that when i ordered it, but i didn't care, because i hadn't eaten anything all day due to feeling a bit weird and uncomfortable. I now think that perhaps i was suffering from heat exhaustion, and the fish just pushed me over the edge ( Read more... )

I hope you feel better soon! I have been there and it is no fun.

I'm imagining you single-handedly influencing the people of that small town to eat more vegetables, by opening a vegan food stand (and of course you wouldn't call it that!). And of course you could learn other skills and trades if you needed to.

I would love that so much. That's always been my fantasy job, to run a small joint where i can serve the very best of affordable street cuisine from different cultures, with an emphasis on more plant-based stuff, and as much cooked fresh/on-the-spot as possible.

When i was younger i thought a diner would be better, to create a sort of cool space where local youth could come and hang and not feel like they had to get moved along, but also have it on a highway exit so you could pick up travelers and truckers to give the crowd some more diversity... But now i think perhaps maintaining a space like that might be too much for me - you'd need to have wait staff and everything... Whereas the small "plastic stool" places that are popular in China, you only really need two people - one to cook and one to wait, and outside of busy times you can get by with just one. Over here in Colombia most of these places are a two-man show as well, where one person handles the money and the other one handles the food.

Getting sick while traveling is the worst. I'm glad you're recovering, take it easy a bit ( ... )

Yeah, it sucked a lot. I mean, it would've been worse if it was hardcore gastroenteritis or something... fortunately all the ejections happened within the first 12 hours, and then after that it was just stomach cramps and nausea for a couple more days. I have stepped up over three days from chicken breast to pork loin to red meat today, so i think i am good again. It definitely helps that the weather is a bit cooler now too ( ... )

While electric vehicles might catch on in rich western countries, I'm not seeing the internal combustion engine going away any time soon in developing nations. The infrastructure for electric vehicles is just not there and doesn't even make sense in those economies.

Childcare regs vary by US state, and I'm currently in one of the more draconian ones. The ostensible reason is to protect children from death or injury by "unqualified" providers, but death rates have not dropped at all since implementing the regs, but there are a lot more bureaucrats that have been hired to enforce compliance. Meanwhile, in immigrant and poor communities, there are still women watching 20 or so kids completely under the table, and nobody is the wiser until a house burns down. But my neighbor who is watching a friend's kids 3 days a week is technically breaking the law, though it's doubtful that she'll get reported.

One thing missing from the question about 'what would I do in a different time period' is that you'd be trained to do other things. You might have learned to sew or herd animals or travel from place to place selling things, or to be a tinker.

It's impossible to directly translate current skillsets and training onto other time periods; they don't fit.

I think the thing is that my skills aren't skills where i use my hands. Every piece of value i bring to the world is abstract, it's because of something i know, or some ability to organize people or data into a structure that's theoretically useful to someone else. So although yeah, maybe i would've been trained to use my hands centuries ago, it seems more likely that i would've ended up in some other job of the era that exercised similar soft skills that i have now ( ... )
