I haven't done a full-blown picture post in a while, so here are a bunch of photos that will lead me through a description of my bikeless interlude, where i traveled from Riohacha up to Cabo de la Vela and back.
Manaure apparently has a full-blown salt industry where they harvest salt from the lagoons. One of the guides i was talking to in the parking lot while his group was climbing the mountain told me about it and said it was definitely worth checking out if i'm interested in how it works. I think i would like to do that. There was a salt industry in Aguadulce (Panama) as well, but you can't tour it, and it's one of those things that would've been on my bucket list for the ABC islands too. It might be something worth checking out if i make it back to La Guajira before my 90 days are up.
I didn't know much about the salt harvesting process, so I just spent time right now looking at it on Google. It looks so interesting! I think a tour would be awesome if you can find one. Too bad there isn't a place that would loan you a pair of the boots and a shovel and let you try to harvest some salt yourself!
You remind me how some old postcards of the Great Salt Lake in Utah would have a little bag of sand sewn on them. My first thought was how cool it was that the postal service used to just deliver stuff, even in weird shapes, that would never fly now.
I have one of those salt bag cards someplace, but here are some shots of one somebody has on eBay now, which happens to be about salt harvesting:
I didn't even know that deserts existed in Colombia before you visited. Love how your journal takes me to places i never otherwise would have heard of.

The salt lake thing seems interesting, even from a distance. I'm glad you enjoyed the desert.

Pleased to see how happy you are looking! You know how you have in that photo of the cactus? I really love that as part of a landscape.
Lovely photos!
