I know i've been gone for a while. It turns out that going to school 5 days a week, even for "just" 4 hours a day, completely exhausts me. It feels exactly like work. On top of that, because i was staying in a homestay for two weeks, i felt really self-conscious and awkward whenever i was "home", because i didn't know if/when the family would come ( Read more... )

You know, it actually was! I was a bit grumpy while i was in Bocas because it wasn't what i expected or hoped for, but that particular day, finding the quietest spots on the island and just hanging out enjoying the scenery... it was worth it.

I genuinely not surprised to see pay phones in Panama. Just a few decades ago, a lot of these places had phone centers, where people gathered to make phone calls out of their villages or neighborhoods. Pay phones are just the next step up from that.

Smart phones exist for sure, but I'm sure the poorer areas that used the phone centers have moved to the pay phones now.

Ah, i remember seeing a bunch of those while waiting at bus stops and wandering along the highway. I can definitely take a photo next time i am out of the city. Not sure if it's signposted that way inside Panama City proper. Would you like just the sign, or the sign with a bit of scenery around it?

and... two years?! how are schools closed that long?? do students not learn and/or is it all online..? I'm guessing not.

They've been doing online learning and perhaps some home-schooling since COVID hit. I think some private schools are open here, but public schools are still closed. Parents are going nuts, it's kinda fractured the whole economy because parents can't easily go to their own work either if the kids are at home. The government says it'll restart this year, but we'll see.
