I hope so! I am planning on making the first few legs all around 50km, so even if i break down half way i am still one day's walking distance from town. I hope that after a week or two i will have plucked up enough confidence (and fitness) to go for longer stretches.
What do you mean by mapping? I trust that the existing maps will already have all the roads i cycle on, i don't really intend to leave my GPS turned on and add new trails to Open Street Maps.
On Austin... hey, you never know! I have a pseudo-destination of Windsor (Ontario) in mind, because my friend R lives there and it would be nice to catch up. But also if i'm really honest i don't really care very much about the US northeast or the Great Lakes. I am much more interested in the prairies/plains and the desert. Plus the deep south, since i've never been there before. So it might turn out that after the Rockies i just go south, and then Texas will definitely be a possibility before heading east around the Gulf. (End goal is the Caribbean.) Who knows? I am really curious to see how my body holds up. This might all end poorly after a week of cycling and a sprained back.
Lights, check! I don't have any hi-vis gear, though. All of my clothes and gear are blackish because i am miserable like that. I think it will be wise to pick up a hi-vis vest, though.
I think Canada in general has good shoulders for riding on, but I don't want you to end up road kill. You make for a good friend to read about your ventures.
If you were wanting to bike in Mexico, I'd be a bit more afraid. Mexicans in general don't really pay attention to bicyclists outside of major cities.

You did a damn good ride for it being your first time. Your body will get used to it.
