I'm not sure if that's a generally British thing, or something that was unique to the British Forces. It seems like it would make more sense on television channels that only go out to a couple hundred thousand people.

Another interesting thing, which you can see examples of on the YouTube account of the guy who posted the birthdays clip, is that between every show there would be a presenter who let you know what the next show was going to be. I'm not sure if that happened on television outside of the Forces either.
