Cops suck. They are just paid sentinels for the wealthy. The thing I fear most is that all the draconian shit they are instituting as preventative measures for COVID will become permanent laws. It's like when the ruling classes decided that the planes were going to get overrun by terrorists and turned the process of getting on a plane into the same experience as being booked into prison.
I'm curious if in China the "temporary" fences and checkpoints they erected around urban villages and residential districts in Shenzhen have been made permanent. Even when i left in July, months after the lockdown supposedly ended, they were still there.
Apparently when SARS happened the government locked down all the universities, and after SARS was over, the checkpoints at university entrances mysteriously remained. When i got to China i thought checkpoints were just a standard thing since CCP day one, but apparently it's been getting gradually worse over the past 20 years.
I won't at all be surprised if some of these measures stick around in the west too.
Maybe try 90 days in Finland?. You have the skillz. But then, the deadline is the 10th December and you'd probably prefer to go just go somewhere and not via a "scheme". Still, I did think of you when I saw it!
That looks neat! There is something oddly appealing about Finland... all the Scandanavian countries, actually. I know liquor is very expensive up there, plus - you know - the cold, but it seems folks are generally pretty good-humored. The Canadians of Europe!
When the virus is over, i am going to start thinking again about "schemes" like this. My original plan was to come to North America and do some of the traveling that for years i always wanted to do here. It's extremely expensive to travel here - much moreso than anywhere else in the world - and right now i am fortunate enough to have the means to do it. Unfortunately i underestimated how much of an impact the virus would have on local businesses. If things recover sooner overseas, i might end up putting North America on hold for a while. But if they don't... well, in the long term, i do sometimes wonder if i'd be more comfortable working and then growing old back in Europe. Culturally i do think i fit in better over there. We'll see...
Maybe just apply anyway, it would probably take a while to get an answer and if they accepted, you could decide if you wanted it or not then. Might be something to do over the next few days anyway!
I mean, it is cold in winter like Canada, but it would be Helsinki, a capital and pretty interesting, with stuff close by easy to visit (like Tallinn, where the booze is super cheap!)
And covid-wise, Norway and Finland have managed to keep virus levels really low and with that, lockdowns fairly minimal, so social and economic recovery might be quicker there. (Sweden... perhaps not so much.)
I do frequently think about having my company sponsor me to come live in Denmark for a while. I think I could weather it fine and learn that funny language. Not sure if my family has the appetite though... I also kinda just wanna be a nomad family once this is over. We'll see
I don't think so - there are no restrictions on walking (or sitting) outside. Honestly, i was sitting on railroad property, because the railroad owns some amount of right-of-way on both sides of the track. So technically i was trespassing, but it still seems a bit silly to make a fuss about it when it's just a patch of grass by a public street with no fences to block it off.

Was this like covid restrictions related? What a bizarre experience.

I rarely go inside. Even when’s it’s really cold. Glad I’ve got some land around me!
