drowning in this internet maelstrom

Nov 15, 2020 21:43

Last night i slept about 1 hour because i just lay here in bed so upset over this cancellation nonsense. That people completely ignore what i have to say, as an actual trans person who has worked in a women's support group, who has been a victim of sexual abuse myself, who has had to justify my very existence to people i was standing face-to-face ( Read more... )

I totally get your frustration. People really can just generally suck, tho, in every way you are laying out. But what you say *does* matter. Maybe not the way or in the venue that you want it to. You have been on the front lines so to speak fighting the good fight. That allows the next generation just a little more wiggle room and it can make all the difference. Also, just in our limited exchange here on lj you've informed my decisions on how to cope/deal with my daughter's journey. It means a lot to me and it means a lot to her. Just in passing comments or in more recent rants you are the veritable butterfly of the butterfly effect. If nothing else you are helping me to be a better more informed person and I will be doing my best to spread that around.

Thank you for this comment, it means a lot. I think right now i am dealing with "normal" depression so the current drama layered on top is making me more down than it otherwise would. The butterfly effect is real, it's good to get a reminder.

I was going to type a comment, but I think Bill has summed up my thoughts with the very last sentence of his comment.

I didn't know this story about early Christianity, but i definitely appreciate the link to religion, because in my opinion this sort of online "activism" shares a lot of characteristics. People are expected to hold some kind of unquestioning faith for the cause. Any discussions about the strategy or the tactics or even the fundamental nature of the belief are only allowed to come from people who are already on the inside, not those who are affected out in broader society. It all feels so cloistered.

The odd thing on this issue is that many of these "trolls" believe themselves not just to be perfectly reasonable people, but in fact great crusaders for social justice and peace! They might even be very nice, kind people in everyday life, but for some reason on certain internet topics it's pitchforks out, burn the witch. It doesn't feel very considered to me. Although, i suppose, a lot of my own LJ rants or political hot takes don't come across as considered either.

Yeah, the story I told about early Christianity and Constantine was how the Nicean Council happened which is how Christianity was first codified... the battle over who WAS a Christian and who WASN'T and what being a Christian MEANT... which was what all the Christians were murderizing each other over ( ... )
