I definitely think you'd be better off in Germany. Things are mostly less wasteland-ish here...!

I definitely would be better off in Europe, as far as the urban planning and general lifestyle goes. There was no easy way to get there from China, though. I might still end up there...

I think the even scarier thing is considering that in the States, at least, a vast number of people have never known a community different from that wasteland. And so often, they actively resist experiencing anything else, and want other places to look more like theirs (and vote accordingly.)

This is what baffles me. I truly don't understand the appeal of living in suburbia. There is literally nothing good about it. It's not close to work. It's not close to entertainment - either urban or countryside. It's not safe for the kids to walk to school because nobody walks. Some people might say "well at least i get a garden", but what use is a garden when it's packed tight up against everyone else's garden? It's not like you have any privacy. You don't have the freedom to build whatever you want because of zoning restrictions, or worse - homeowner associations. Can't play music loud. It seems like the worst of all worlds.

I suppose people might think that it's all they can afford. But that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Governments approve this kind of development and developers build these kinds of houses because people buy them, not the other way around. Surely it would be more efficient to build units or mid-rise apartments, even row-houses, and put in more parks and businesses?

My uncle lives in a suburb of Vancouver that is like that but the houses are bigger. We got so lost trying to find his place last time. There were no landmarks.

Exactly this! It's really strange, the only way you can easily tell where you are is by the street numbers. There are no shops or parks or even extra-large trees or anything to navigate by.
