when the news takes a toll

You know all the MeToo shit that happened in pop culture a few years back, it didn't really hit me personally because most of the people named, i either had no idea who they were, or they were people tangentially related to movies i liked who i never really thought about again after i watched the movie. Sexual abuse is awful, but just like with the ( Read more... )

I have always thought that lease agreements were so....limiting. They really do trap a person. At my last apartment before I got into a house, the place could be rented month to month but it was $450 a month higher for doing it that way. Who can afford to do that!?

With my job, i could afford pay that month-to-month tax. But it's even more offensive that landlords will do that because it's exactly the people who are struggling most with money who are the ones whose circumstances might change in a way that means they need to move out quickly.

It really feels wrong to me that renters, who generally are people with less assets and less well-paying jobs than homeowners, are held over a barrel and tied to their job for the full term of their lease. Like, here's yet another thing to make it harder for people to climb the social ladder, you know? Ah well.

I've only ever rented a place requiring 1 months notice to leave. Thinking about it I've also not known anyone who has been tied into an agreement for a year. Maybe it's not done here so much.

I hope it is not too complicated a process to move onto your next destination.

That's wild, where have you lived? Literally every country i lived in the standard rental agreement was 12 months. Sometimes they let you switch to month-to-month after the first 12, but that's rare. I've rented my whole life and the only times i didn't have to sign an agreement like that is in share houses or basements where the primary lease was already in someone else's name.

Im in England. Maybe its because I have rented hospital accomodation and shared houses, I also rented houses privately when younger and only had to give a months notice. I had never gone through an estate agent though, always directly through the landlord.

I've also not heard of friends experiencing this issue either. Not to say it does not happen though.
