Am I a failed sci-fi nerd because - despite having seen every episode of every TV Trek - I have hardly seen any of the Star Trek movies

Glad someone else liked The Motion Picture. Despite it's pacing flaws, it's really the only Trek movie to really be a Sci-Fi movie at heart. The others are all character pieces that happen to be in the future.
Star Trek II, is an amazing movie, but I think that's because of the second half you didn't see. The opening is very Mad Max "Apocalypse Looking Guys Take on Kirk" but you see the chess match that goes on through the movie, and it become very intense.
Also, as good as TMP was, it was severely watered down due to a dispute between Roddenberry (who wanted Big Ideas in the movie, at the expense of Drama) and Harold Livingston (who wanted Character Developement, at the expense of dazzling special effects). I prefer Harold Livingston's version (except for, as he puts it, "where I farted away the ending.")
I always enjoyed reading your exposés on the history of the movie, so I am very happy I finally got around to watching it. It's neat to have some context on it all.
I was impressed with Star Trek 1, but I was a child and easily awed. I read later that it rather stands out stylistically because it was trying to up the game a bit in the style of 2001 a space odyssey. After that they returned to a more TV style.
