The receptionist stared at him, then, remembering that Mr Luthor had told her quite specifically to look for a tall, blond man ("--All-American, dumb jock type. Hard to miss--"), pressed the intercom on her phone to Mr Luthor's office and said sharply, "Someone here to see you."

A few moments later, Lex emerged from the elevator doors the second time that day, straightening a wayward yet pristine cuff. His smile was cold and failed absolutely to reach his eyes as he strode across the lobby, though his voice was bordering on the positively jovial. "Mr Rogers. You've kept me waiting."

Innocent until proven guilty, Steve reminded himself, though the look of sheer malice in Luthor's eyes might have been enough to convict him. Steve schooled his features carefully, and stuck his hands in his pockets, slouching slightly. It wasn't much, but might be enough for a man like Luthor, who looked all too ready to underestimate the people around him.

"I'm sorry about that, sir. I'm also sorry to have to disappoint you. I'm not here to take you up on your deal, see, I just wanted to know if you've seen Mr Stark around. He and I had a misunderstanding earlier, and it occurred to me that he might be here."

"You just missed him," Lex said airily, purposefully vague. "Sorry."

He thought fast; then gave an easy shrug.

"All right then. Thanks, mister. I'll see you later."

Steve turned on his heel. If Lex still wanted to get rid of him, he wouldn't let him go so easily. Steve was counting on that.
