This is awesome. I really like it, and I can't wait to find out what happens. I don't know GA at all, but I do recognise the "special flat tone of voice", *lol* and the way nurses are the most astonishingly noisy bunch of people.
You've done an excellent job of getting inside Sam's head, and I love the way thoughts of how he can't get it up for Maya lead straight to nostalgia for the comfortable domesticity he had with Gene. And Gene turning up with a suitcase, and Sam throwing away all his old pants? Gorgeous, spot on.
And yes, apart from the humour and the hidden sensitivity and the sheer presence and gorgeousness that is Gene, the warmth and security of his body through the night would be what Sam missed most.
I'm not a fan of Grey's Anatomy in any sense of the word, which is probably why I really enjoyed reading this, with Sam's pitch-perfect snarkiness over the generic good looks of all the doctors in the weird, oversized hospital, lol. There's lots of details like that which made this such a great read, like the business of Maya petting Sam's hair and the jello, and Sam going so far as to dare Dr. Hunt into his bed just for the chance of something like his memory of Gene was simply heartbreaking.

I don't even KNOW Grey's Anatomy but I know american TV so I was howling with laughter over the HUGE hospital room and the pretty, pretty doctors. I loved the details -- jello (without hospitals, the jello industry would *fail*!) and Maya petting Sam's hair when she wants to get her way and the doctors travelling in packs except at night...infact that last I really liked as it kind of gave the doctors a preditory feel. Interesting.
And this Dr. Hunt...seems really, ah, touchy feely for a doctor. Not a criticism because I don't know the character; is he like that in general?
And loved your bried description of Sam and Gene, which was awesomely in character, especailly them not actually talking about what they were to each other.
Sam seems very at peace with the idea that it was all a coma dream, which honestly is not something many fics explore and probably should. After all, that IS the logical explanation, and Sam would accept it even if it felt wrong.
I am one of those closet Grey's Anatomy fans, but recent occurrences in my life have meant sporadic viewing at best (I think the last episode I remember seeing was Callie deciding she would like to sleep with the woman Doctor whose name escapes me...)
Anyhoo. I loved this; so much rings true with how hospitals are portrayed on TV, and the little touches are what make this so complete.

Gene never made the connection between that and Sam being like a missus to him, probably because Gene's missus had never done what Sam did.
Dunno why, but I rather like this observation. Grin.
