podfic collections on the audiofic archive -- a tagging dilemma

Sep 03, 2013 21:04

Over on twitter this evening, I was discussing with general_jinjur the possibility of adding a new tagging feature to the audiofic archive: adding tags to collections of podfics that are compiled together but are not directly related like a “series” or a “verse” (fyi, the super awesome series tags are all here!). ( Read more about the tagging idea and help me figure things out! )

The first two look good, the third one sounds like a repeat of #2? As long as there's internal consistency to the tagging system, whichever way you choose will work in the long run, provided fandom doesn't suddenly find a new definition for anthology/collection. :P

I tend to think of a bunch of collected works in a series (i.e. story, sequel story #2, story #3 as a sequel of that, etc) as simply a 'series', though using collection as a synonym of 'series' is more intuitive to me than anthology; I tend to define anthology as short stories independent of each other with overall themes in common.

Also, I really appreciate all the work the both of you have put into maintaining the archive and making it so easy for us to search. Thanks so much!

We already have series tags, which I *love* and use often, so I'm pretty excited at the prospect of trying to bring together non-series collections/anthologies in some way. :-)

Thanks for throwing in your two cents.

Hm. I like "collection," which seems nicely general and wouldn't clash with the existing "anthology" tags (for single or multiple readers). Or does that just make it confusing, using two different words?

Maybe collection is the better way to go to avoid confusion regarding those in a series or verse being called an anthology. That one looks fine to me.

All of your hard work is so appreciated.

Interesting. Yeah, some collections only have one or two stories I'm interested in, and when I started out in podfic it was hard to figure out where those were. As a reader, I also had trouble understanding how my podfic was gonna be archived when I participated in a collection (I think it isn't, as a result) - but that's all about me being a huge n00b. As for accidentally downloading a podfic I've already heard - I don't really mind that very much. If I remember the title, it won't happen, and if I don't, I just as well might do that anyway, regardless of it being part of a collection. Not such a big deal, as far as I'm concerned. at least.

HI, I have no idea which terminology would apply better, but I do think that a collection/anthology tag of some sort would be super-handy! :)
