Hi everyone! Here are some podfics I consistently turn to when looking for some easy aural company. I seriously have listened to these over and over, because the stories are perfection and the performers are bringing it home.
Note on links: I sort of grabbed all of them from the audiofic archive. If anyone listed prefers a specific post or account be linked instead, just let me know and I'll change it, no prob. :)
The Heart in the Whole - written and read by
verityburns[mp3, 552.2 MB, 10:21:00][m4b, 282.6 MB, 10:21:00]Sherlock (BBC) | Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
verityburns has this smooth, rich voice that sinks deeply into the perspective of each pov character. You ache right along with Sherlock and John as they struggle through the consequences of the scene at the pool. Sherlock's vision is damaged, and Moriarty is still harassing them, and in the middle of it all, Sherlock and John are falling in love.
Pins of Bone, Six by Ten - written and read by
Fresne[mp3, 23.8 MB, 52:36]Epic of Gilgamesh | Enkidu/Gilgamesh
This is probably one of the rare fics I would be rereading often, if I weren't always re-listening to it. The translations of the Epic that I've read (if only I had some Sanskrit....) depict Gilgamesh and Enkidu's friendship as a subtle, layered thing, underneath all the frankly squee-inducing declarations of eternal love. (World's oldest known homoerotic love story, no lie.) This fic, and its reading, honor the complexity of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Each is uniquely drawn, a unique, sometimes flawed, sometimes funny, always redeemable individual. Their relationship is understated at the same time it is underlined. The whole thing is just elegantly written, and I'm really grateful the author recorded it herself, since her vision with this fic is so delightful.

themusecalliope[mp3, 272.3 MB 3:22:10][m4b, 98.8 MB 3:22:10]Sherlock (BBC) | Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
This is the first podfic read radio-play style that I had ever listened to. The performers play their parts to the hilt, enthusiastically becoming their characters, and the story hits a lot of my personal fic kinks (slow-build, mutual hidden fondness revealed through trifling little gestures, kidnapping, heroism, plot, etc etc). Impossible to listen to only once.

Eugene and Rapunzel are totally gonna get married... eventually. I appreciated this fic's look into Eugene's internal process of figuring himself out before committing to a lifelong relationship. It's funny and intriguing and just as feeling-good-making as the movie.
reena_jenkins really sells the pov char's sense of cautious self-examination.

lunchee[mp3, 152.7 MB, 5:33:16]Merlin (BBC) | Merlin/Arthur Pendragon
You can tell lunchee is having the time of her life telling this amazing story, which is the sense I get from ragepufrock's work in general--that the writer is seriously enjoying herself. The combination of author and reader having such a great time pretty much leads to me relistening quite a bit. Lunchee's Merlin, btw, is pitch-perfect.
