The sponge cake layers didn't seem right ahead of time, but they were very very close, once the cake was all put together. About the only innovation needed is some way to make them flat, so that the assembled cake needn't lean to one side.
The frosting used for the outside was similar to the stuff I remember on the inside, as you wrote. The outside should be darker brown and fudgy. I suspect that the outer icings might be more closely approximated by something less rich and more sweet and dense--like the cans of Duncan Hines frosting you can buy in a store.
Possibly we should have some frosting tasting experiments, to get a better idea of where we're going.
