Death of Marwa El-Sherbini

I have no clue how I managed to miss THIS story, but it's sickening.  So sad.  This is what religious zealotry does.  Right here.

I agree that story is really sad. Are you saying she's the religious zealot and if she hadn't been wearing the headscarf she wouldn't have been attacked? Or that he is for saying the things he did? I personally think his reaction had a lot less to do with religion than it did with the more general "hating people who are different from you".

No I'm talking about him. He called her a "terrorist" (because you know anyone who isn't Christian and wears a head scarf is obviously a terrorist) and said he couldn't have hurt her feelings because "those people" aren't really people and thus don't have feelings. "Those people" shouldn't be allowed to live. From all of the links I followed when reading this story, the impression I got was that he attacked her because she's Muslim.

Yeah, I agree it's ridiculous. I get the impression that there are not a lot of Muslims in Germany at all. Stuff like this really saddens me.

I think I'm not going to click on any more of your links.* They depress me. :/ I want to bury my head in the sand sometimes.

Of course I will, but...ugh. This after reading that heartbreaking article in the Washington Post last night about the people who accidentally left their babies in a hot car is enough to swear me off the news forever. Too sad.

Yeah they depress me too. I missed the article about the babies. How in the FUCK do you "accidentally" leave your babies in the car?

People are so worthless!

Actually, it's completely and perfectly understandable, believe it or not. I thought the same thing, until I read this article. Do you want me to link you? I completely understand if you do not, though.

What happened to Marwa el-Sherbini was horrible but how can you say it was a result of religious zealotry. The article doesn't say anything about the attacker's religious motivation or his religion at all and, in fact, Germany, like most of Western Europe, is extremely secular in orientation. I'd say that, on the contrary, this attack was the result of cultural bigotry. To the extent that religion was a factor at all, el-Sherbini died because she was practicing her religion. So it was anti-religious zealotry rather than religious zealotry.

Well, I suppose you've got a point there. However, regardless of what his religion was or was not, his problem with her was her religion.

But.... reebar August 30 2009, 00:24:41 UTC
...it's not just A point, it's the WHOLE point. We don't know anything about the killer's religious beliefs. There's nothing religious about calling her a terrorist or saying she isn't human. He could be an atheist for all we know. To claim that this poor woman's murder is a result of religious zealotry is nothing less than blaming the victim and I know you don't want to do that.
