Unlike the past two days of this meme, I actually feel like talking about this because ... religion is kind of my thing. In a way, it's kind of always been my thing. Basic overview: My parents raised me Catholic, then when I was eleven and the priestly sex abuse scandals started breaking in the US, the Church and I had an enormous falling out

*hugs* ... I don't mean to be hugely offensive, sweets, but your brother sounds like a dick for that comment. Atheism and agnosticism are related only in that they don't just accept the mass assumption that there has to be a god or god-like thing out there. Both terms encompass a lot of different thoughts and practices, but the people that the term "agnostic" tends to cover ... The best way I know to describe it is that atheism is even less in favor of actively questioning god's existence than agnosticism - and, going back to linguistics, the literal meaning of the first IS "without god-ism," so positing a world-view in which there is definitely no god, whereas agnosticism posits a generalized world-view in which there might be gods or god-like things, but there's no sufficient way to really prove one way or the other, and that we have no access to non-material knowledge.

... long story short: I think your brother has no idea what he's talking about and is being ridiculously judgmental.
