Sounds like we have similar buttons. Parents fucking up might be understandable depending on circumstances, but that still doesn't absolve them of all responsibility.

And I'd never heard the term 'parentification' before. It sounds apt, but I think I better not read more about it lest I get all bitter.

some of the stuff that bothers me is a kind of erasure of how they grew up from how they behave now (in the case of Sam and Dean) as if Dean's self sacrificial nature came out of a vacuum. There seems to be little awareness of John's role in this, or little acknowledgement of it. And yeah, the reason I love John as a character is that he's allowed to be complex enough to both love his sons dearly and to have fucked them up royally due to his parenting choices. Usually parents on tv are monsters if they are "bad parents."

I don't know about a novel, but I'd quite like to read the essay-length version of your thoughts on Dean and parentification.
