So what my instructor said was that ski ratings are scaled to the place: if I'm skiing on Mount Everest the most difficult slope there is a black diamond, and if I'm marking off my suburban backyard like a ski resort then the little hump in the back on top of the vegetable garden is a black diamond just 'cause it's most difficult of the slopes there. *shrugs*
