Art from Russia

It's quite possible that everyone on the Russian sector of LJ has heard about this guy already.
But I figured most of my f-list might not have, so allow me to introduce you to an artist I recently discovered.

Vasily Shulzhenko (Василий Шульженко) is a Russian artist who has recently become popular after several of his paintings were featured on ( Read more... )

I see Otto Dix, and George Grosz too.

But also something else that I can't quite put my finger on. I guess you could say any sort of social realism with a grotesque/satirical vibe? Tooker and Albright come to mind, since they approached realism in a more surreal fashion.
The urban realism definitely comes from that last painting though.

Which reminds me, have you ever seen Tom Huck's work? I can't remember if I've ever posted a link or not.

Huck's name sounds familiar, but I can't remember if it was from a link you posted or from stumbling onto it independently. Either way you ought to repost.

I realy dig the Cadmus piece. It has an almost Albrecht Durer feel because of the gravure line quality, but a way more whimsical approach to subject matter

btw, I think that the thing that both of us were having trouble identifying is the figurative quasi realism of Edward Hopper/Eric Fischl....

Tom Huck: http://www.evilprints.com/gallery.html
He's from MO, lives in St. Louis and has shown some stuff locally at Sherry Leedy. I think you'd really like his stuff.

You know, Hopper's name came up when I was trying to figure out whose work I was thinking of, but he's more focused on space, less on figures.
I looked up lots of American urban realist painters, and I think the Ashcan School might be comparable too. But I was actually trying to think of someone mentioned way back in my Modern Art class w/Cromwell. One of the guys was Reginald Marsh, who's related to the social realists of the 30's. But this guy was later than that. I wish I had my notes from 10 years ago!
Fischl--I can see that.
