Seven Deadly Sins - Envy: ”… those who commit the sin of envy resent that another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it.”
Lyle looks out the car window and watches the lights in the windows of all the normal homes of the neighbourhood. He and his mom drive out into the night while Claire is running off with what’s-his-name by her side. There she goes, just like that.
Now I’m good for something, Lyle thinks. Now that mom needs to create a distraction.
Because Claire wanted her to. Because Claire said that that guy was special. So naturally, she had to hide him in her room, while those people out there are watching the house, just waiting for an opportunity to do god knows what.
Lyle knows that his mom hates that they’re being watched. She hates that their privacy is being invaded, she’d do anything to make it stop. She said so, earlier that morning; Lyle can remember her exact words and her tone of voice when she said it, brushing Mr. Muggles with almost impatient strokes of the brush as she spoke.
And yet she does whatever Claire wants her to do.
Lyle just doesn’t get it. He knows that Claire always hated her ability and wanted nothing but to be normal. He knows that right now, all the people with abilities are being hunted, and that’s why they are watching his house; because Claire is one of them.
Claire is supposed to keep a low profile. She isn’t supposed to help anyone. If anything, she should think of what’s best for her family! And if she doesn’t, at least their mom should think of it.
But she doesn’t. Lyle asks her if he can get a burger and she says yes, but her voice is tense and he knows that she’s thinking about Claire. Whenever does she not?
Lyle wonders if there is anything he could do diffrently.
He suspects that there isn’t. Because after all, it doesn’t seem like it’s really about that damn ability. It seems like Claire will always be special, even when her ability is being frowned upon and has to be kept a secret. She was special already when they were kids, when no one - well, except their dad, obviously - knew about these special people at all.
Yes, Lyle can see it now. He didn’t really think about it when he was younger, because he was so used to it and he didn’t know any better. But he thinks about stuff now. He understands.
Their dad always asked about Claire first. How her day had been, if she was home, or where she was, if she wasn’t at home when he came in. He hugged her harder. He gave her nicknames.
His eyes lit up when he saw her.
Lyle would be a fool if he thought that Claire is loved for her regeneration. No, that just adds to it; makes her more special; more trouble, more in need of being watched and taken care of, and thus more precious. But before that. Before and beyond that, she’s just Claire-Bear.
And Lyle has nothing against that.
He loves his sister. But sometimes he wishes that the Petrellis had kept her like they ought to have - what kind of family gives their kid up for adoption when they’re perfectly capable of taking care of her themselves? - because then maybe he would have been the one who had that something that could make him special just by being there.
