Forbidden I was already almost awake when I heard a knock on my door.
“Out of bed, you sleepyhead!” Matt called. “Time for breakfast, then school.”
“Nooo”, I tried, “do I have to go to school? It’s Mohinder’s first day home, can’t we just do something fun, all three of us?”
“Molly, that’s nonsense”, Matt said, “school is important, you know that. And speaking of Mohinder; he has made you a special treat for breakfast, so come on now.”
I stumbled out of bed, not surprised that Matt didn’t want to let me stay at home. I liked school, at least sometimes. Matt had hated school when he was a kid, he told me about it once, but that seemed to make him even more determined to see to it that I got through it without problems.
And when I opened my door, I could feel a sweet smell.
“What is it?” I asked as I hurried to the kitchen table to have a look.
“I’m not sure”, Matt replied, “some Indian breakfast food… it’s delicious.”
Matt was right; it was delicious, and I hoped that Mohinder was going to make it for me every day - no more cereals or toast for me!
Matt had already eaten and was doing the dishes. Mohinder came out from the bathroom with wet hair. I smiled at him and he ruffled my hair as he passed me by, walking up to Matt.
He was looking serious as he put a hand on Matt’s shoulder; he squeezed it a little, then he took his hand away. Then he put it back.
“So”, he said slowly, “what do you say, Matt?”
Matt turned around and looked at Mohinder; his cheeks were a little pink, but he didn’t look uncomfortable.
“I’m not sure”, he said. “I don’t know how to… how to do this…”
Now what? I thought. What’s the problem? I knew that it wasn’t that easy to drag something out of Matt if he didn’t want to talk about it.
“But we agreed that we have to tell Molly at once”, Mohinder said, and Matt nodded.
“Tell me what?!” I asked, getting off my chair. I hated it when they kept secrets from me.
“All right”, Mohinder said and took Matt’s hand, “how about this? Are you okay with this?”
I smiled. I thought that I could see where this was going.
Matt blushed, but he nodded, and said:
“Molly, do you remember that you asked me yesterday when we were cooking if I wanted to be with Mohinder forever? Well, last night, we talked about it…”
“Oh my God!” I shouted, “are you two finally together?”
“Um…” Matt said.
I rushed over to hug them - well, as much as I could, because it wasn’t so easy to hug them both at once, but Mohinder took me in his arms and lifted me so he could look me in the eyes, and he said:
“Molly, you do understand that ‘together’ means more than friends, don’t you?”
“Of course!” I said, “I’m not a baby, Mohinder. I know that you are in love, we were just waiting for Matt to finally admit it, weren’t we?”
“Hey, wait a minute.” Matt tugged at Mohinder’s arm. “Have you two been talking about this before?”
Mohinder smiled.
“Yes”, he confessed, “sort of. A little. Molly sees and hear things, you know…”
“Oh, I sure know that!” Matt tried to look cross but I didn’t believe him.
“I’m glad”, I said, “that you listened in on Mohinder’s thoughts that night.”
“What?” Matt cried, “Did you know about that?”
“Yes. I’m sorry, Matt. But I’m glad you did, because it made so uncomfortable that Mohinder had to go away for a while…”
“Oh, yeah?” Matt said, “you’ve got it all figured out, have you?”
I nodded firmly.
“Yes, because when Mohinder was in India, you finally had to admit that you missed him so much because you belong together, and you weren’t so scared anymore. And now that he’s back, you’ve obviously said the right things to him…”
“I might have…”
Matt looked at Mohinder, who looked right back at him and smiled, and it made me so happy, because Matt looked both happy and a little shy and much more relaxed than before. I realized that all that strange tension that had been floating around in our home for such a long time had disappeared somewhere during the night.
“So”, I said, “can I ask you something?”
“Sure, Molly”, both of them said.
“Is it okay if I call you my daddies? I mean, when I talk to people… it’s kind of hard to explain, you know, that none of you is my real parent but I live with you, and people ask questions that I don’t like to answer because it makes me think too much about stuff - not that I have forgotten my mom and dad…”
“Of course you haven’t”, Mohinder said, “and no body wants you to forget them. When people are gone and you can’t be with them anymore, it’s only natural that you find other people to love. It doesn’t mean that you forget them.”
“I still think of them every day”, I said with a shudder of grief, “and I miss them.”
“Of course you do”, Mohinder said and hugged me tight, “but you’re allowed to be a happy little girl, too. And we are a family, the three of us. I’ll be honoured if you want to refer to Matt and me as your daddies.”
“I agree”, Matt said, “I love you, Molly.”
Matt’s arms were long enough to hug both me and Mohinder.
“And you love Mohinder too?” I said, because I really needed to hear him say it out loud.
“Yes”, he said, and there wasn’t a shadow of a doubt in his voice, “yes, I do.”
Great, I thought, this is the best breakfast ever. And maybe we’ll go somewhere to celebrate, and I won’t have to go to school today after all.
