Hokay, I hate troubleshooting these things long distance because I want to help and usually can't! But here goes...

First, completely de-install the printer. You may have to do that both in add-remove software AND add-remove hardware. Do the hardware first, then the software. If you don't have the add/remove hardware icon, go into system, hardware, device manager and find the printer, then right click to delete the damn thing. Then go delete the software. Reboot. And I do mean, reboot.

Bring the computer up normally, WITHOUT the printer attached in any way. If you can't, don't put the computer on the net or the router, just bring it up as if it were a stand-alone unit with no intarweebs connection. Once it's up, connect the printer directly to the computer via USB (or parallel, but it's more plausible it's USB). You should get the 'found new hardware' window, it should give you that "Hey, I've found new hardware which is a Dell printer and I don't know what it is!" If it doesn't, let me know before you go further ( ... )
