It’s the 22nd May again. Maybe I’ll get the same phone call today. Not to say I’m a phsycic or anything, just a annual thing to have. A call from the “unknown”. I know who or what the “unknown” is. Of course. By just listening to the voice. It’s him. On that day… was it my fault? Only God knows. I’m staying here clueless of what happened before.

***

“Between Two Alphas…”

“Playing the Field…”

“Silence…”

“Cupid’s Grandaughter… this one wasn’t really good.”

I mumbled the titles to myself. One point, I’ve read them all. They’re all fine to me. Now I need to hunt a new story to read, either in books or online. But I’m so gonna stop borrowing books from this library. The only books I didn’t borrow are business and financial stuffs (which to me, thay are all absolutely boring). As I pushed the wooden car slowly, passing by the shelves on my sides. My eyes widly observing the books and their labels. Some of them are perfectly in order, like they should be but most of them are annoyingly messy. They’re not in order! Sometimes I stopped by at one of the shelves to rearrange the books according to their respective labels. After quite some time I’ve dealt with the books, I bumped into Chie, my best friend, who too, doing the same job as mine. I tapped her shoulders. She didn’t strtle or anything, just giving me a plain look. “What?” she asked.

“Take 10.” I said. She nodded and continued doing her work. I walked away, leaving her alone and my cell phone vibrates suddenly. When I take a look at the sender, yup, it’s from him. Chinen Yuri. Ohayou. Are you busy?

I smiled at that. As always, that’ll be his first question. I walked towards the counter and took over for a whle, as the other staff need to go to the waskroom. I replied, Ohayou. Not really. What are you up to? I quickly stuffed in my cell phone when the staff came back. I left the counter and wander around dumbly by myself. Looking here and there, flip through the books, observing people.

Let me tell you something about Ihara Chinen here. He’s a stranger. Weird right? Communicating with a stranger is dangerous (tht’s what okasan said). I just happened to know this guy when there was a sudden message from him asking me “Are you holding Pride and Prjudice?”  I thought he sent the message to the wrong person. So when I replied “I think you’ve got the wrong number” he answered, “I know you’re holding it. I saw you at the library the other day”. Sort of scary eh… but I don’t know why, we kept in touch since then. We had the same interests - books.

Then I suddenly caught an eye of someone. He looked familiar. Oh yes, it’s the cute guy who came to the library everyday, keeping himself busy for I-don’t-know-what. Sometimes I happened to meet him at one of the sections like non-fiction and astronomy science. He sometimes asked for my recommendation for a few topics for him. We don’t really talk, but I’ve been observing him for quite some time now. Am I called a spy? But I don’t work for any agent. He’s somewhat… interesting in some ways. I wanted to approach him but I hesitated to do so. I’m gonna do it today. Yes. He seemed busy today, as usual, typing something in his HP notebook. He sometimes refer to some books on the table beside him, flipping over a few pages here and there. I gather up my guts and went over to his place.

“Hey”

He looked up. It took him seconds to recognise me when he said, “Oh hi.”

“Can I sit here with you?” I asked.

“Sure. I just thought of taking a break.”

“What are you up to?”

“I’m writing a story for the annual one-shot story competition for this year.”

Sounds interesting. He’s working hard for it ne.

“What about it?”

“Practically about strangers who met up in some unique way. I’m still thinking about the ending.”

“Ah… I’m looking forward to it. Good luck for it.”

He grinned. “ I’ll make sure that you’ll be the first person to read it after I finish the story. I wanna ask about your opinion about it before I submit to the oganizer.”

My eyes shone brightly, I think. Yay~ another upcoming story to read. I don’t care what kind of genre is it. We stayed silent after that, nothing was said between us. He continued writing his story and I just stay there, watching. He’s really into it ne. Suddenly I felt soomething pulled me from behind, I almost fell. It was Chie. She hissed to me “What the hell are you doing girl? Dating or what? Go back to work now! The boss gonna be really mad at you if you keep this up.”

I stood up and joined Chie. I managed to turned around and smiled at the guy before we left. As we walk, another message came up. “Any good books?” I can hear Chie sighed.

“You know Mika, you should concentrate on the real world than having cell phone dates with this guy.”

“Shut up. Leave me alone like this.”

After a while Chinen and I decided to meet up at a café donwtown. Yes. Today is the day. He said he finished writing a story he worked on a few weeks ago and promised me to bring it. So I waited for him at the café and ordered my drink. He told me he’ll be here in half-an-hour. Of course I’m eager to see him. I wonder what kind of person he’ll be?

It’s been two hours now. He didn’t show up. I tried to call him but I didn’t get through his line. Once I managed to dial up his number, I left a voicemail for him. “Hayato-kun, I’ve been waiting for two hours now. Where are you?”

Maybe it was a joke.

He’ll never meet me anyway.

Why would he bother too?

I waited for another half-an-hour and decided to call him again, maybe this time I’ll yell at him for what he did. Surprisingly, I received a call from his number. I quickly pick it up.

“Chinen-kun where ar-“

“Now I know who you are. Kawashima Umika-chan. The librarian.”

“Eh?”

“I wanna let you know this. I’m serious about our cell phone dates. And…”

“Wait, how do you know?”

“Umika-chan. Aishiteru yo.”

“Chinen..”

“We’ll meet again.”

He hung up.

I called his number over and over again but I can’t get through. After the 20th time (I guess), someone picked it up, but it wasn’t Chinen. It was a lady.

“Hello?”

“Chinen-kun?”

“Are you Kawashima-san?” she asked.

“Yes. I am. Where is Chinen-kun?”

“He’s at the hospital right now. I think you’re and important person to him. You’d better come.”

I dashed to the hospital and asked for the name Chinen Yuri. A nurse led the way. Surprisingly she didn’t go to the patients’ ward, instead we’re heading to the corpse room. When she opened the door, there was a lady, noble-looking and a body in front of her, covered with white sheet. I walked up to the lady.

“I’m Kawashima Umika.”

“Thank you for coming.” The lady said. “I’m Yuri’s aunt.”

“What happened?”

“Yuri said he’s going to meet a girl named Umika today. But he…met with an accident on the way to the café he promised to go. At first the ambulance people thought that he can survive until he’s sent here but he… didn’t make it.”

“What?” I looked at the body. It’s familiar to me. Why?

He’s the guy who came to the library everyday.

He’s the guy who asked me about books.

He’s the guy who I dated over the weeks through cell phones.

I only talked to him a little a few days ago and now

He’s lying down here, in front of me, lifeless.

His face is so calm yet pale.

“You’re Chinen-kun?” I mumbled. “The guy who I ‘barely’ know? Like.. you’re in front of me all the time and yet..?”

“I think he wants you to have this.” Chinen’s aunt gave me a clear file filled with a few papers. I took out one of them, which is folded and read it. It’s more like a piece of journal. He wrote this last night. Nothing much, maybe he just scribble down his thoughts about that day.

“I promised to a girl named Umika, to let her read the story I wrote for the competition. But I failed to finish it, maybe I’ll ask her to help me with this and submit it to the oganizer later. Umika. A girl I never known. We just happened to get in contact. Who is she?Does anyone know? There’s a girl at the library named Umika too. But I think that she’s not the person who I dated with. The librarian was kind and hard-working. I can see that she loves books (just like Umika). She borrows books everyday and sit at the corner of the library and read them. We talked face-to-face a few days ago, she asked me what am I doing. By the way, I’m meeting Umika (the one I dated with) tomorrow. I can’t wait for it ne.”

At home, I read Chinen’s story.it wasn’t that long nor short. Just nice. Guess what he wrote? Yup, he did tell me (the other day) about the rough idea : about strangers met up with each other. He made that up?

He wrote about the situation we’re in. Exactly.

He stopped writing at the part when the couple in the story met up at a small stream in a village. “…As promised, the strangers met up at the stream. A place that both of them knew. It was awkward. But eventually they learn about each other. More things to know. They played with the water childishly. It was a sudden thing when…”

I don’t know what to write.

Is he trying to make the scene become a tragic or make the stoy a happy ending?

“Chinen-kun. What are you writing?” I whispered to myself.

Should I finish up his story or let it remain unfinished?

***

“…the girl almost tripped on a small stone but the guy managed to catch her. They accidentally kissed. It was a shicking one for both of them. They broke away, embarrassed. The girl’s face went red like a tomato. Again, it was awkward. How could you possibly kissed a person who you just met? This one is an exceptional.

‘I’m sorry’ the girl whispered.

‘Ne… I have something to say.” The guy said. The girl slowly turned her look at him.

‘Aishiteru’

‘We’re strangers’…”

I stretched out my arms. It was tiring, I mean it. I looked back at my laptop, grinning. I think that’s it. I clicked on the icon ‘save’ and closed the software. Suddenly my cell phone rang.

It shows “unknown”. There was no number appeared. Just a single word.

I picked it up with no hesitation.

“Moshi moshi. Umika desu.”

“Umika-chan. Arigatou.” A voice said.

I smiled. “Chinen-kun…”

“What will the title be?” he asked.

“Um… I don’t know. Any suggestion? This is your masterpiece anyway.”

“My masterpiece? No. it’ll be ours.”

I laughed. “Oh come on. It sounds weird okay.”

“Then name it ‘Quiet Love’”

“Okay. Done. I’ll submit this under your name okay?”

“No.Just mixed your name with mine. Put there Chinen Umika.”

“What? Hey, I’m not married to you okay.”

He laughed. “ Fine fine. Put UmiChii then. As a nickname.”

“Good idea.”

“Umika-chan.”

“Yes?”

“Aishiteru yo.”

I kept quiet and nodded. “Un. Aishiteru.”

“Mata ne.”

He hung up.

I looked back at the call log and there’s the word “unknown” with no number. I can’t call it back. I can’t call him back. I’ll wait for next year 22nd May.

‘Quiet Love’ - submitted by UmiChii. Finished 22nd May 20XX.
