Jimmy Carter has severed ties with the Southern Baptist Convention after six decades in the name of gender equality. I'm so proud to have had him as a president of my country during my lifetime.

Thank you for sharing this. I agree with the message.

However, I object to his singling out the Middle East as a source of backwardness. He tries to emphasize the worldwide existence of the problem, but providing one region as the only concrete example particularizes the issues too much to one area.

Genital mutilation is practiced in Africa, the Middle East, and the UK. Human trafficking for prostitutes occurs on every continent, in every nation, including the U.S. If he's going to give concrete examples, involve everyone. The West is as culpable for backwardness as any developing nation.

Very, very good point. His specific examples were primarily focused on the Middle East. I wish he'd been MORE specific about other countries on subjects other than saying that here there is a wage gap.

Even so...To have people stand up and make a public split with a religion that is oppressive to women? I'm thrilled--especially when he's splitting with one of the most common, white-bread religions in America.

I am literally sitting here at work with tears running down my cheeks as I read this.

I have adored Jimmy Carter for a long, long time, but possibly never more so than right this moment. May this message ring out long and strong throughout the world.

Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. I think I saw it first with cybertardis but by the time I got to read it I couldn't remember for sure.
