I got to scan the kids' spring school photos (thanks, Lisa!). They're amazing this year (see new icon). (ETA: next to the photos are Husband's and my 2nd grade school photos, now.)
These are definitely a Chicago area thing. Where I grew up you had the mug-shot-pose once a year and if it was bad, well, how sad for you.
SO few public schools have uniforms in the States, and even those who do typically allow students to attend school in whatever they want on picture day, since the photos are a cheap way for parents to get photos of the kids that will be back before holiday cards are sent.
It's possible that the school gets some kind of something from the photog, who gets LOTS of (low-rate, but lots of) business from a single day of marathon kid-photoing. I truly don't know. But it's been the standard always-done thing since I was little, so, at least since the early 70s.
Examples of the typical thing referred to when someone says "school picture" are these:
Husband in 2nd grade, 1975.At any rate, the SPRING photos now have a "pose" option and effort is made to make them GOOD...and then they send them home to TEMPT the parents, saying that you can pay for anything you like, and then
( ... )
The pose option is what makes it :D It's more like professional photos and since you have to pay it makes it better than a regular school shot. Really nice idea.
O_o I didn't realize that Elf was wearing glasses! [and they're so COOL! heeheehee] May she never get into the phase of "OMG Big PLastic Colored Frames With Tinted Lenses Yay!!" that I went through. LOL [had a classmate not *know* that my eyes were blue, until we had to do things like take off glasses to draw one another during art class--my lenses were tinted brown at the time]
LOVE the pics, SO cute! [Ben looks as if he's going to start laughing Any Minute Now, though. Adorable!!]

I adore photos of children when they have no front teeth. It is one of the most adorable things ever!!! :D :D
These are really beautiful school photos. School pictures in the UK are always horrible and in uniform.
