Last night, all four of us went out to the movies! We saw Race for Witch Mountain. My kids have seen (and Elf loves) Escape and Return (and I've read her the original book which is quite different to the movie--well, any of them
( Read more... )
I have a feeling we'll be doing Witch Mountain later today. I haven't seen the previous ones -- does that limit the enjoyment, do you think? (Not that I'm really going for my own enjoyment, but still, you never know.)
I don't think it limits the enjoyment at all. I just think that knowing the old ones and knowing where there's an homage to My Old Beloved Thing ADDS enjoyment for those of us for whom it's nostalgic.
This movie is not a continuation or a sequel; it is a new, separate "based on" movie that draws on the concepts. It's quite very different to the other movies (and not just because it has actual effects) and quite very different to a lot of the ideas from the original book which I've read countless times).
I just really loved going to a movie that was rousing fun, predictable, cute, action-packed, and didn't require lots of thought.
Thanks -- you've cheered me up immensely, because the reviews were kind of depressing. But then again, the critics trashed Bedtime Stories, and I thought it was a hoot.
I loved loved loved it. I laughed out loud frequently. I got to cuddle with my daughter, who was hugging my arm through all the scary bits, I thought the astrophysicist lady was HOT (and she reminded me STRONGLY of Diana Skouris from The 4400 which was also lovely). There were car chases and explosions, and cameos from the original Witch Mountain kids.
Are there plot holes? Certainly. Husband rolled his eyes at the inability of these feds to set up a perimeter or actually guard secret entrances but...well...how would they have the plot otherwise? I nit-picked it for 5 minutes or so, then was done because I just was ENJOYING.
But it has good acting (certainly better than a lot of Disney live action stuff) and car chases and explosions and telepathy and telekinesis and stilted I'm-not-from-Earth speech patterns and multiple bad guys (three separate threats, all, imo, well-used) and Garry Marshall and I had a ball and plan to own this.
I'm just debating some stuff concerning my potential major, and would like someone to run the ideas by - however, it is not horribly urgent, and I need to look into some aspects a little further before I can even lay out my options, as it turns out. So, if I can get a hold of you in a week or two, that would be great - I've been keeping up on LJ, and I do hope the cough/seasonal hell gets better, and that everything else is going fairly well. Miss you!
