Everyone must read
mtgat's articulate, organized, researched, intelligent, and concise essay on why the comparisons of Bush to Hitler are not blown out of proportion and are terribly, terribly frightening.

Another thing that alarms me is the indulgence otherwise sane people will give to various conservative pundits. Ann Coulter says dissent is treason. And what's the response to treason? Kill the traitor. Limbaugh advocates killing liberals. An opinion writer recommends taking the Democrats in the House and Senate, lining them up against a wall, and shooting them.
And the response is silence. And when I state that some of these folks have gotten to the point where I think them nutcases on the verge of violence, I get condescension in return. Oh, how very quaint of you. We'd never do that.
But those talking down to me still listen to the pundits, nod their heads, and claim I'm not patriotic.
Every time I feel a suspicion of Bush & his cronies, I tell myself, maybe I'm overreacting just a bit. Such as, surely the recent spate of terror alerts couldn't possibly be due to poll numbers favoring Kerry ( ... )

My nightmare scenario? Bush, reelected in November, unable to run for another term, having no need to appease anyone or to moderate his language in ANY WAY. From someone who believes that God put him in power and who missed the memo that "Divine Right" went out in Medieval Europe. What would he do then for four years? What would be left when he was done? How much would it, by then, look like 1938 or 1942 or (god help us) 1944 Germany?
The worst is that I feel like I'm living in 1934 Germany, and that there's little I can do to convince those who are falling for the selective media coverage and careful PR that it's a shiny, dangerously thin veneer.
I'm terrified.
