Running Dark

“Take the left, Jones!” my partner barked, and I broke left, into the alley that ran behind the warehouse.

It was narrow and dimly-lit, crowded with wooden pallets, cardboard boxes and rusting dumpsters - easier to navigate, since I was quicker and usually more agile than Howell. I could hear his footsteps pounding down the larger and longer side street.

The alley turned, following the twist in the street to continue along the back of the other warehouses along the block, and I turned with it. Light filtered between the buildings, but the lights in the alley itself were out ahead, and with the moon barely a quarter full, it was difficult to see.

I heard sirens coming from the far street and grinned - our backup had arrived, and Howell and I were chasing our suspect right toward them.

Howell rounded the last warehouse building at the same time I did, and just in time to see the suspect surrounded by raised, police-issue weapons.

“Good work, partner,” I panted, jogging to a stop. Howell glared at me, but I knew he really meant, You, too.
