“My ancestors were Welsh coal miners,” I said with a shrug, as the members of Fire Engine 11 continued to stare at me. “I actually like small dark spaces.”
Howell gave my safety harness a confirming tug. “Just don’t get too comfortable down there, Jones. We’ve still got a missing four-year-old to find.”
I nodded. “Yes, sir.”
“According to the schematics the city clerks finally turned up,” said the fire captain, “this pipe usually carries storm run-off, you should be clear for a few hundred feet.”
“Be safe,” Howell added, as I slid into the manhole.
I smiled. “Yes, sir.”
