Lights & Sirens

By the time Howell and I had finished our patrol logs and had changed out of our uniforms, the sun was just beginning to rise between the chrome-and-glass buildings of Philadelphia.

I shaded my eyes as we stepped out onto the sidewalk, scowling. “I am going straight to bed when I get home, and I’m not getting up until it’s dark out.”

“I didn’t work you that hard, Jones,” said Howell.

“Do you see that sky, sir? Red! Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. Now, I don’t believe in, you know, mystical whatever, but even I can take a hint.”

My partner snorted. “Rookie, I’ve been around since before electricity, and I know superstition when I see it.”

“Fine!” I said. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you, sir.”

“We’re not even soldiers, Jones. I’m pretty sure whatever small amount of science was at the heart of that saying, it had to do with the weather affecting sea conditions, neither of which directly pertain to us.”

“Well-” I began, but broke off as distant alarms began to sound. Fire stations, it sounded like, and a moment later, I could see the flashes of blue-and-red lights between the skyscrapers.

“Not another word, rookie,” said Howell, sharply.

I smiled. “Wasn’t going to, sir.”
