Fair Weather

“I hate day shift,” I muttered, leaning back against the brick wall, to stay as much in the slim shadows as I could.

It was close enough to autumn that my long sleeves weren’t completely out of place, but I was still a distinct contrast to my partner in his light-weight summer uniform.

“You’re getting overtime pay,” Howell pointed out. “Think of how many books that will buy.”

I scowled. “That’s kind of not the point, sir.”

He ignored me, but at that moment, my radio crackled, “Jones, give me the sight line.”

That was Officer Chavez, at the other end of the street, and I held up the little laser pointer I was holding. We usually used them for figuring out ballistics trajectories at crime scenes, but they came in handy for this, too. Chavez also had a pointer, and the light appeared over my right shoulder, moving down until it met up with my own.

“Okay,” he said, over the radio. “Now move to the other corner, please..”

I looked across the street, which was awash with bright sunlight, and heard Howell sigh behind me. “Give me that,” he said. “And put on some more sunblock.”

“Thank you, sir,” I said- then, before he could move, I reached up to smear a dab on his golden-tanned nose. “Can’t be too careful.”

He glared, and took the laser pointer to position, called back over his shoulder, “And don’t forget your ears, rookie!”
