Crime Scene

We were halfway through our regular driving patrol when the squad car radio crackled. I answered, letting Dispatch know we were available. There’d been a 911 call from an establishment between Sixtieth and Walnut Streets, not far from the theater, and when we arrived outside the Lilac Inn, we found a visibly-anxious young man waiting.

“He’s dead!” the kid said, as we got out of the car. “Oh, my god, he’s dead.”

I snagged the kid’s arm. “Let’s get inside,” I said. “Is it safe?”

Pausing in the glass-walled entranceway, the young waiter explained that he’d gone into the back to ask his manager a question, only to find the man slumped over his desk, covered in blood.

“You’re sure he’s dead?” I pressed.

“Yes, ma’am,” the kid said. “I… I took some first aid classes, so I checked for a pulse, but he was-”

“Okay,” I interrupted, gently.

“Scene is secure, Jones,” said Howell, coming inside. “Two more units have blocked off the street, and detectives from Homicide and the Coroner are on their way. Who else is in the building?”

The waiter swallowed, but shook his head. “Nobody. Just… just him and me. We were closing up.”

“The detectives will want to talk to you,” I told the kid. “They need to rule you out as a suspect.”

“But I didn’t do it!”

“Then tell them the truth,” I said. “All of it. Leave nothing out. They’ll get this sorted out.”

“Really?” he asked, hopeful.

I looked up to see a police-issue sedan pull up outside, and two detectives get out. “We’ll do our best,” I assured him.
