Protector

“If I tell you, you’re going to laugh at me,” I said.

“Rookie,” said Howell, setting half his hoagie back down onto the battered park picnic table. “I have seen you fall flat on your face just walking down the street. I won’t laugh.”

I huffed, but mostly because that was true. “I just mean, I went to college first and not to major in Criminal Justice, I’m not ex-military, so a lot of times, people just can’t understand why I’d want to be a cop. Especially other cops. And it’s not just the… you know.”

Howell nodded as I waved vaguely, clearly correctly interpreting that to mean ‘vampirism’.

“And even the people who do kind of understand, at least, that I want to give back, they wonder why a cop, why not… I don’t know, join the Peace Corps, or something.”

“Because that’s not your nature, Jones,” my partner said. He balled up his empty hoagie wrapper and looked at me over his package of Tasty Kakes. “You don’t want to help people, you want to protect them. There’s a difference.”

My smile must have been ridiculous, but I didn’t care. “Yeah,” I said, softly. “Yeah, that’s… that’s it exactly, sir.”
