Water, Water Everywhere

Sometimes, I wasn’t sure which was more annoying, the people who saw my police uniform and thought enemy or the ones who thought solves any problem. For some reason, most of the other residents of my apartment building were the latter. Whenever our landlord couldn’t be found- which was often- they came to me to fix whatever had gone wrong.

Today, it was the plumbing.

More specifically, it was a lightning hit to the building’s roof, which had traveled through the (substandard) wiring to the (woefully out of date) piping, all the way down to the basement and the hot water tank, which then leaked water all over the floor.

“Awesome,” I said, darkly, slumping against the wall after finally managing to get the main water valve shut off. The water was only a few inches deep, but that was still a few inches too many. The tenants’ storage area was the shed out back, so there wasn’t much in the basement to get damaged, but it still needed to be cleaned up.

I fished my cell phone from my back pocket and hit my most-used speed dial. “Hey, sir,” I said, at the barked answer of my partner’s name. “Do you think the guys in the motor pool will let me borrow their shop vac?”

THE END
