Lifeblood
“Hospital called,” my partner told me, not ten minutes after the ambulance had left, “She didn’t make it,” and I sat down, hard, on the curb.
I didn’t even know the woman’s name, but my hands were covered in her blood, still red and sticky between my fingers, warm from the heat of a body that was, somewhere on the other side of the city, starting to grow cold.
Howell put his hand on my shoulder. “You did everything you could, Jones,” he said, and I knew he meant it.
I nodded, but that didn’t make me feel any better.
