Satisfaction Guaranteed

“Yes, Mrs. Reyes, we’ll look into it,” said Howell, as he handed back his teacup and let her walk us to her apartment door. “If you hear from them again, please call us right away.”

The elderly woman was the fifth fraud victim we’d interviewed in under three hours, all of them older people in rent-controlled apartments, offering them shares in a new company. The salespeople- con artists- claimed that the company made wristwatches, and showed one as an example, beautifully made and with a lifetime guarantee.

There was no company, of course, and probably just the one wristwatch, but there wasn’t much we could do until we got more than just a vague description of the suspects after the fact.

“I’ll get this stuff added to the BOLO,” I said, trailing my partner down the hall and back out to our patrol car.

Howell always drove- he claimed that a hundred-plus years of experience with Philadelphia geography gave him an advantage, but I was, secretly, convinced that he just didn’t want to have to deal with the laptop we’d been assigned to manage our call-outs.

“There’s still not a lot to go on,” I said, when we’d pulled back onto the street, and I’d skimmed through the rest of the fraud reports. “They seem like nice guys, when they knock on little old ladies’ doors. Dress nice, talk nice, have papers that seem legit. No web presence for their so-called company, but none of their marks probably even own a computer.”

“They’ll have to slip up eventually,” said Howell. “And when they do…”

“I know, sir,” I said. That was a guarantee I could believe in.
