Breakfast Table

“You have a strange look on your face,” said Howell.

It was the morning after the full moon, and we were both sitting at his kitchen table having breakfast- bacon and eggs from the diner down the street, since my partner apparently didn’t trust me not to burn the place down. I never minded being on breakfast duty on the ‘mornings after’, because it was nice to be able to look after Howell for a change.

“I was just wondering, sir,” I said, then because I’m me, I kept going, “Does human shampoo work when you’re in wolf form?”

Apparently, Howell really was used to me, because he just shrugged. “I’ve never showered in wolf form.”

“And what about your teeth? If you brush right before the full moon, is your wolf self all minty fresh?”

“Are you saying that, as a wolf, I have bad breath?”

“I would never say that, sir,” I said, as innocently as possible.

He didn’t buy it for a moment. “Your mind works in strange ways, Jones.”

I grinned. “Thank you, sir.”

We were quiet for a long moment, both of us hungry after the long night, eating in companionable silence.

Then, I asked, “In the winter, do you get ice stuck between your paw pads? And how mad would you be if I knitted you a set of those little doggie booties?”

Howell took another bite of toast and said, mildly, “I didn’t know you could knit anything more complex than a scarf.”

That was true. But now I had very good motivation to learn.

THE END
