Should Do

“What the hell are you doing here, Jones?” my partner growled, when I let myself into his brownstone, with the key he’d given me.

With anyone else, I probably would have been offended by that question, but I knew Howell well enough to hear the worry underneath his growl.

“I know I look like I’m just one big walking bruise,” I said, “but the EMTs at the scene cleared me, remember?”

“You should be resting,” said Howell. Outside, the sky was a riot of gold and pink and purple, as the sun disappeared behind the gleaming skyscrapers. “I’ve done this on my own for longer than you’ve been alive.”

Someday, I would feel comfortable enough to ask Howell how he ended up alone. There were werewolf packs, though none in Philadelphia- they tended to prefer rural area, unlike the snooty, urban vampires- but in all the time I’d known him, Howell had never mentioned being around other werewolves at ‘that time of the month’. And I knew he wasn’t a complete loner, he volunteered with several lycanthropy awareness and advocacy groups. Werewolves were much more likely to hold blue collar jobs and need help or counseling- I was pretty much the only vampire who worked for a living.

“Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should,” I told him.

One corner of his mouth quirked up. “It’s not much fun to have your own words thrown back at you,” he said.

“Serves you right, sir,” I said. “I can rest just as well in the werewolf bunker as I can in front of my TV.”

“Don’t call it the werewolf bunker, Jones,” said Howell, but he snagged an extra blanket from the couch as we headed downstairs.
