Twenty-Nine

When I thought about it, the idea of being a year away from thirty was much less frightening than the idea that I’d been a vampire for a whole decade.

They say you can get used to anything, and I guess they’re right, because I usually don’t even think about the glass bottles of syrupy pig’s blood in my fridge, but the afternoon of my twenty-ninth birthday, I was very aware of the bright red blood jelly as I spread it on my ‘morning’ toast. I suppose I didn’t feel twenty-nine, whatever that was supposed to feel like, and somehow being a vampire just made it worse. Because I didn’t look twenty-nine, probably wouldn’t for several decades, maybe even closer to a century. I hadn’t looked my age at nineteen when I’d been Bitten, and once you’re Bitten, you age so slowly it’s hardly noticeable.

At this rate, I’d be carded for the rest of the millennium.

My apartment intercom buzzed as I drained the last of my coffee- my second cup, since I hated mornings, even when they happened in the afternoon. I grabbed my cap and uniform jacket, and clattered down the stairs to join Howell on the front step of my building.

“Jones,” my partner said, by way of greeting, and he held out a brown paper bag. Inside was a doughnut, covering in thick icing such a vibrant blue that it had to be artificial.

“Thank you, sir,” I said, breaking off a concealed drip of icing, before I stowed the rest for later.

His lips quirked up, just a little. “Happy birthday, Hezekia.”
