Blood and Chocolate

“Hey, Jones,” said Officer McNichol, who had the desk kitty-corner from mine in the crowded squad room. “You got any candy? I think my blood sugar is starting to feel a little low.”

I looked up from my battle with the precinct’s ancient copy machine. “What? Oh, sure. Top drawer, left side. But don’t take any from the red box.”

“Thanks,” said McNichol, and I could hear her rustling through the random assorted sweets I’d accumulated.

Once I’d won my fight with the copier, I went back to my desk, feeling a little hungry myself, and pulled out the red cardboard chocolate box.

“Secret admirer, Jones?” asked Howell, smirking. “That why you don’t want to share?”

“No, sir,” I said. McNichol had left, and there wasn’t anybody else nearby, so I added, “You might be able to eat these, too, sir, but I didn’t think McNichol would appreciate dark chocolate truffles with blood ganache.”

“No, that’s just you, Jones,’ my partner said.

“You know, I think I might have actually liked these before, too?” I said, knowing that Howell would know I meant before I became a vampire. “Maybe even if I’d known what was in them. Not that I enjoy drinking blood, of course, sir, but it’s an interesting flavor. With the bitterness of the dark chocolate, the blood tastes sweet at first, but then the chocolate melts and you get the iron from the-”

“That sounds like a highly personal experience, Jones,” Howell interrupted, “And you should keep it that way. Now, eat your bon-bon and get back to work.”

I popped the candy into my mouth, closing my eyes against bitter, sweet chocolate and sweet, salty blood.

“Work, Jones,” said Howell.

I smiled. “Yes, sir.”
