Learning

In most of the old myths, vampires are almost invulnerable to injury, and if they did somehow get hurt, a good day’s sleep in their coffin or a quick drink of human blood were always enough to get them back to fighting fit.

For once, I wished those stories were true, if only so I wouldn’t have to sit in the back of a stuffy meeting room, listening to a so-called weapons expert lecture on the “types, history and use of firearms,” while I held my left arm as still as possible in its sling. I mean, I was beyond grateful that Howell didn’t let me fall off that rooftop, but popping my shoulder back in hurt just as much as dislocating it in the first place.

“This is boring, sir.” I muttered.

My partner, who had excellent hearing and could teach Zen masters a thing or two about patience, glanced sideways at me. “Patrol or learn,” he said.

“Hey, I like learning,” I protested. “Recovering librarian, remember? This is just boring.”

“Okay,” said Howell. “Let’s go.”

“What?” I hissed. “We’re going to just- Okay.”

I followed him into the hall and down the stairs, to the shooting range in the subbasement of the precinct.

“You can’t shoot with that shoulder,” Howell said, signing us both in, and an assortment of firearms out. “But you can listen. I’m still a certified instructor, Jones, so this will count. Pay attention.”

By the time the sun rose and our shift ended, I could identify half a dozen different calibers of bullets by sound alone, and Howell had added a new qualification, in his neat, precise handwriting, to my official file.

THE END
