Hunting Monsters
Most of the time, Howell and I were like any other officers on the beat. Most of the time, we seemed as human as anyone, as easily tired or hungry or frustrated as any other person would be.
But sometimes, there was a killer on the loose, escaped from jail with three more innocent deaths on his hands. Sometimes, a fugitive needed to be hunted with fangs and claws.
Howell growled, low in his throat, and I brushed my hand against his fur. “I can smell it, too, sir,” I said. “He’s wounded.”
My partner raced off, and I followed.
