Splish, Splash

I’ll admit, I’m not that great a swimmer. I mean, I don’t drown when thrown in water, but I don’t exactly float, either. And being a vampire with a pre-existing hatred of sunshine, hanging out at the beach wasn’t exactly on my to-do list.

Still, when I heard the shout from the edge of Penn’s Landing and saw the small figure slip from the rock she’d been standing on and fall toward the water, I kicked off my shoes and jumped in after her.

The water was cold and I kept my eyes tightly shut as I reached out. My fingers closed around wet wool- I really hoped it was the Catholic schoolgirl I’d seen fall in- and pulled, until I had a distinctly human-shaped figure in my arms. I kicked up, hard, propelling us both back to the surface, and suddenly there were hands pulling us up.

Paramedics took the girl immediately- it was her, a little brunette in a sopping school uniform, who was surrounded by her friends as soon as I let her go- but I waved them off, until there was only one set of hands holding me up and tugging at my equally-sopping jacket.

“Down to your skivvies, Jones,” said Howell, softly, leading me over to our patrol car and holding up his own jacket. “You can’t stay in those wet things.”

I looked like a kid playing dress-up, wearing just my underwear and my partner’s jacket, huddled in the front seat while one of the EMTs looked me over. “I recommend a hot shower and some dry clothes,” she said. “And if it’s possible, don’t stay alone tonight.”

I nodded as she left, and twisted to look at the driver’s seat. “Looks like I’m bunking with you tonight, roomie.”

“After you write up your report,” said Howell, but he reached over to turn up the car’s heat.
