Night Walk

“There’s something that’s been troubling me,” I said, as Howell and I walked through the dark Philadelphia streets on our patrol.

My partner glanced sideways at me. “Jones, I don’t believe I’m qualified to address the things that are troubling you.”

“Very funny, sir,” I deadpanned. “But I have a question, and it’s a little… personal.”

I knew he would know what I meant. Howell and I didn’t have much in the way of personal lives- we weren’t hermits, we did have interests and hobbies, but nothing that couldn’t be talked about at full volume on any given street corner.

Except for the one thing.

“Sir,” I said slowly, “I know why I requested the night shift, given my condition, but doesn’t yours make it easier to work during the day?”

I couldn’t imagine that in a hundred years of police work, Howell had never considered that, but I had to ask.

We walked silently for a block and a half, then my partner said, “Moonlight is often more of a benefit than a curse. Even as a human, my senses are sharper at night. And it’s easier to change when the moon is out.”

“Huh,” I said.

Howell snorted. “It’s not really something that gets talked about. Most of us try to pretend that we’re perfectly ordinary, except for those unavoidable times.”

“But not you,” I pressed, knowing I shouldn’t.

My partner arched one eyebrow. “Officer Jones, have I ever given you any reason to believe I was ordinary?”

I laughed. “No, sir.”
