Family Jewels

Howell didn’t talk about his family much. He didn’t avoid talking about that, it was just that they didn’t come up often. And I mostly understood why- people tended to talk about the people they lived with and/or saw every day, and in Howell’s case, as well as mine, that was co-workers and neighbors, instead of any blood relations.

I still talked about my parents sometimes, but as much as I loved them and missed them, they just weren’t part of the everyday life I talked about anymore. And it had to be harder for Howell, whose family had died before my parents were born- even most of the things or places that could remind him of them were gone.

So, any time my partner did mention his parents or his younger sister, I listened and collected every bit, like a dragon hoarding treasure. It was the simple things I liked hearing about the most, a recipe his mother had made, his sister’s favorite perfume, the way his father had read the newspaper on Saturday mornings. Each memory seemed precious, that he’d shared him with me, like I had known them even if we’d never met.

Of course, I should have realized that my partner thought something similar.

“There’s a theater downtown showing Snow White,” said Howell, as we got off shift.

It had been my mother’s favorite movie, and one of the last he’d taken his mother to, when the film had first come out.

I smiled. “That sounds perfect, sir.”
